IF you’re reading this in Newcastle, look up. Pretty good chance you’ll spot a smart person.
Linger on the spot and you’ll see someone dressed for the beach, a couple of thugs, the odd schemer slinking off to court. Point is, you could swing a yo-yo for a minute and take out at least three smart people.
Topics is convinced of our city’s smarts because we keep meeting people like Dan Wright, a tech entrepreneur who’s turning laptops into goats in Africa.
That’s the premise of his GiveTech project, an offshoot of his company Regional IT. It’s an online technology shop whose profits go to – for now – families in Kenya.
‘‘I like the challenge of making money, but I like it even better when I can give it away,’’ Wright tells Topics.
‘‘In Australia we tend not to look past our first world problems; my coffee’s too cold, my hedge needs trimming. That’s nothing compared to what they’re dealing with over there.’’
Launched six months ago, the not-for-profit has one full-time employee in Kenya and contractors in several countries. Wright’s first goal is to provide 100,000 Kenyan families with things they need – like goats. Then he wants to expand into Africa’s 20 poorest countries.
‘‘I’d like to raise awareness not just of Ebola,’’ says Wright, ‘‘but also get people to think about what’s happening and how they can help.’’
